THE MARCH IN MITCHELL COUNTY
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 28  BUCK HILL TO GILLESPIE GAP
8:30 am
The Overmountain Victory Trail March participants enter Mitchell County after camping Friday night at Buck Hill in  Avery County near Plumtree.  A portion of the original trail passes near Sunny Brook Store.  This portion was marked at a special ceremony in 1998 and is one of the few remaining visible pieces of the original trail.
9:00 am - noon
Near Unimin, the marchers brave a slippery and muddy path to pay honor to the grave of Captain Robert Sevier, a brother of John.  Captain Sevier was wounded at Kings Mountain.  Inspite of extensive injuries, Sevier struggled to get back home, fearful he would be hung by the Tories.  He only got as far as the site of his grave near the North Toe River.  A second patriot, Martin Davenport,  was buried near the site of Sevier's grave.  In 2002 OVTA Association members will place a marker on Davenport's grave.
4:30 pm
The reenactors gather in downtown Spruce Pine by the railroad station to fire a salute next to the DAR monument "Honoring the Fallen." Spruce Pine will roll out the red carpet to welcome them.
6:00 pm
Enjoy an historically correct meal at Pinebridge Center  with the reenactors who will tell exciting stories about the 1780 Overmountain March.
