Bill Carson Receives Prestigious NC Award This fall our own Bill Carson received the prestigious Charles J. Parker Award from the NC Tourism Industry Association for his outstanding contributions in helping to develop the travel industry in North Carolina. Some previous winners of the Parker Award are Hugh M. Morton of Grandfather Mountain, William A.V. Cecil of the Biltmore Estate, and "Mayberry's" favorite son, Andy Griffith. WE ARE VERY PROUD!
Orchard at Altapass Featured in National Geographic
From Staff Reports Little Switzerland — The Historic Orchard at Altapass has been chosen as one of a group of sites and events highlighted in the first-of-its-kind National Geographic Map Guide to Appalachia to be featured in the April issue of National Geographic Traveler magazine. The magazine is read by more than 900,000 people across the country. In the coming months, another 300,000 copies of the map will be targeted to potential travelers in various ways by the tourism divisions of the Appalachian Regional Commission’s 13 states. Last winter, ARC announced a partnership with the National Geographic Society to produce a map of Appalachia designed to stimulate economic development by showcasing the diversity of the region’s natural cultural and heritage assets. More than 1,000 destinations and experiences were nominated for this honor. Based on extensive research, 356 sites have been selected by National Geographic as representative of the region’s rich, diverse and, in many cases, undiscovered treasures. The result is a map guide that provides a striking representation of Appalachians distinctive geography, culture and heritage, eye-catching photographs and informative text, authored by Appalachian writers, complete this product. According to the Travel Industry Association of America, tourism is a $537.6 billion industry employing nearly 7.4 million people in the United States in 2003. The cultural heritage tourism sector has been growing twice as fast as the overall travel market and the region boasts six of the top 10 states most visited by travelers from this sector. Travelers from this group also tend to stay longer and spend more than average on their trips. In March, National Geographic and ARC will also launch a related Web site at www.nationalgeographic.com/appalachia. This site will feature articles on Appalachian links to all 13 ARC state tourism Web sites and an interactive map of the region to assist travelers from anywhere in the world in planning their trip to the region.
